MCX Now World’s Sixth Largest


MCX has jumped a notch to the world’s sixth-largest commodity exchange in 2015 based on number of contracts traded. This means participation is increasing on the bourse or that simply existing participants are running more trades. MCX jumping a rank is impressive given that the exchange offers only plain vanilla commodity futures

1. What are the contracts traded on MCX? 
     Futures contracts in gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, copper, zinc and other base metals and              certain agri products like mentha and edible oils. MCX, the country’s only listed exchange, is              known as a metals and energy bourse. The other one, NCDEX, is the country’s largest agri                  -exchange.
2. How many contracts (lots) were traded on MCX in 2015?
      A total of 216.3 million lots versus 133.8 million lots in 2014. This enabled MCX to jump to the         sixth rank from seventh in 2014, based on Futures Industry Association (FIA) data. 3. What was the break-up like?
     The product which witnessed maximum trades was crude oil, flowed by base metals, bullion and         agri. No of contracts traded in the energy segment in 2015 was 107.6 million versus 36.4 million         a year ago. Metals traded were 61.7 million contracts (44.7 million), bullion 43.6 million (48.8           million) and agri 3.4 million (3.9 million).
4. Which were the top three global commexes by no of contracts traded in 2015? 
     All from China as was the case in 2014 -- Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (1.1 billion                      contracts), Dalian Commodity Exchange (1.054 billion) and Shanghai Futures Exchange (1.050          billion).
5. What was the ranking of agri bourse NCDEX?
    NCDEX slipped by one slot to No 9, with 29.5 million lots traded in 2015 versus 30.1 million lots       a year earlier.
6. What is average daily turnover of both the exchanges?
    MCX has a turnover of `24,059 core in the calendar year to date, NCDEX had a turnover of 2777.1    crore.
